Welsh duo selected for Olympics

The pair will be heading to Beijing

Welsh duo Christian Malcolm and Philippa Roles have been selected in the Great Britain track and field squad for next month's Beijing Olympics.

Newport sprinter Malcolm, 29, is to compete in the 200m event after shaking off several injuries in the build-up.

Roles, 30, from Neath, will take part in the discus event.

"I think I'm more relieved than pleased at the moment that I made it after a very long season," she told BBC Radio Wales.

Olympic gold medallist and president of UK Athletics Lynn Davies has welcomed the news.

"It's always good news when a Welsh athlete makes the Olympics team because the Olympic Games are the pinnacle of an athlete's career," he said.

"Just to be selected in this day an age when standards are so high is a great honour.

"It will be Christian's third Olympics and is great news for Philippa because she's now consistent at about 60m so both of them are world-class athletes."
