Great Britain veteran Mark Foster will get his Olympics under way in the heats of the men's 50m freestyle on Thursday.

The 38-year-old carried the flag at the opening ceremony at his fifth Games.

Meanwhile, swimming phenomenon Michael Phelps is back in action and GB gold medallist Rebecca Adlington returns to the pool in the 800m freestyle heats.

Britain's Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms are in the badminton mixed doubles quarter-finals, while judoka Peter Cousins is among the GB medal chances.

Cousins will be looking to find a way past Brazil's Luciano Correa, whom he lost to in the world championship final last year, in the men's 100kg judo competition, with Michelle Rogers competing in the women's 78kg competition.

And the equestrian part of Team GB, buoyed by their two bronze medals in the eventing, will be hopeful of adding another medal to their total when day two of the dressage competition gets under way at 1215 BST.

China's Yang Wei will also be back on centre stage on Thursday as he hopes to add an individual gold to his team medal in the men's all-around gymnastics.

Yang was superb in China's team win and goes into the individual event, which starts at 0400 BST, as favourite to improve on his 2004 silver medal.

Britain's Naomi Folkard takes her place in the quarter-finals of the women's individual archery and will hope to be involved all the way through to the final at 1110 BST, while Elena Little has the chance to do the same in the skeet shooting event.

In the boxing, British welterweight Billy Joe Saunders will encounter a difficult challenge when he takes on Cuba's Carlos Banteaux Suarez, while his brother Bradley Saunders is also in action in the light-welterweight division.

And their light-heavyweight team-mate Tony Jeffries will face Eleider Alvarez of Colombia after the British team received a welcome boost with captain David Price's impressive win over Islam Tursimov on Wednesday.

Ben Ainslie and Paul Goodison continue their bids for medals in the sailing, while the latest string of British boats will be hoping to follow the eight GB crews into their rowing finals.
