The 2008 Olympics began officially in Beijing on Friday with more than 200 countries taking part in the opening ceremony, in front of a capacity crowd of around 90,000, at the Bird's Nest stadium. Drums, a light show and a display of fireworks throughout the city heralded a spectacular opening.
