Wembley has hosted a variety of events since opening in 2007 |
Australia and the Barbarians are to play a special match at Wembley on 3 December to mark the centenary of the 1908 Olympic Games in London. It will be the first rugby union game played at the new national stadium. In 1908, Australia beat a Great Britain side (represented by the county of Cornwall) 32-3 to take the gold medal. "It's a unique chance to see top-class international rugby at one of the world's greatest venues," said British Olympic Association chief Simon Clegg. Rugby has not featured at the Olympics since 1924, when the USA took gold in Paris. However there has been recent lobbying to include Sevens after its successful introduction to the Commonwealth Games.
