World Class 2012 in partnership with the British Council tell the stories of the schools where the dreams begin.

The primary and secondary schools of the Athénée Royal de La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium pride themselves on their friendly and inclusive atmosphere.

Set in the hills and forests of the Ardennes in southern Belgium, the town of La Roche has a population of less than 5,000. It is known for its picturesque location and medieval castle which attracts lots of visitors.

The school's students range from ages three to 19 and across both schools there are 450 pupils in total.

Lessons are taught in French and pupils also learn Dutch, English, German and Spanish.

Track talent at Athénée Royal

Olivia attended Athénée Royal between 1989 and 2001, and younger brothers Jonathan and Kevin were at the school from 1994 until 2002.

During their time at the school, their sporting abilities were obvious and they are remembered for working hard in Physical Education (PE) lessons.

Sport is an important part of school life

Sports teacher, Mr Viance, says that the brothers were well-behaved and always receptive to advice offered by the staff.

Olivia's PE teacher, Mrs Ledent, remembers her as a kind and willing student who was always happy to get involved in team sports.

However, away from the track, the brothers are also remembered by Mrs Sougné for keeping each other company in school detention.

The three sprinters were made honorary citizens of La Roche in 2008 and have returned to the school a number of times.

Sport and success at the school

Sport plays an important role at Athénée Royal and mini-football, badminton and athletics are all popular.

The school aims to develop its pupils' individual talents by offering them opportunities to pursue their interests in sport, music and other personal interests.

Pupils are encouraged to pursue their interests outside lessons

As well as producing three of Belgium's 2012 hopefuls, former pupils also include the actor Benoît Poelvoorde, politician Philippe Courard, economist Roland Gillet and the footballer Michel Renquin.

The school are also proud of European Bricklaying Champions, Kevin Herman and Brandon Broecks, who attended the school.

Looking forward to 2012

Staff and students are looking forward to 2012. They plan to use the Games and their alumni's participation to highlight the importance of values such as sportsmanship, team spirit and international relations.

Olivia, Jonathan and Kevin are being tracked as London 2012 approaches and they strive to make their Olympic dreams a reality.
