Great Britain skeleton rider Adam Pengilly has been elected to serve on the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee.

The 32-year-old topped the ballot of nine candidates from as many countries to serve as one of two new athletes on the commission for an eight-year term.

Pengilly was elected with 615 votes, followed by US ice hockey player Angela Marie Ruggiero with 605 votes.

The two athletes will also serve as members of the IOC.

"Clearly I am very excited to be representing the athletes' voice and perspective and, in particular, the Winter athletes," said Pengilly, who will be officially introduced at the Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Vancouver on Sunday.

"It is a real privilege to be elected by my peers. I will represent them to the very best of my ability."
