British Bob duo crash out after third run

Canada 1 led from start to finish to win the women's two-man bobsleigh event as Great Britain's world champions crashed out on the third of four runs.

Nicola Minichiello and Gillian Cooke's sled flipped over coming out of turn 12 to end their slim medal hopes but they walked away from the crash unscathed.

"I'm absolutely devastated," said a tearful Minichiello after the incident.

Canada 1 beat team-mates Canada 2 by 0.85 seconds, with United States 2 in bronze and GB 2 back in 11th place.

Pilot Paula Walker and her brakewoman Kelly Thomas were hoping to break into the top 10 after lying 11th overnight following the first two runs but hit the sides several times on a scrappy final run and finished 0.05 seconds outside of their target.

Minichiello and Cooke could have competed in the fourth run despite crashing because they were both in the sled as it slid over the finish line to record a time, but they chose not to.

"We didn't do our fourth run because Gillian hurt her leg in the crash and because the sled was damaged," Minichiello, who suffered a bruised shoulder, added.

"It's frustrating. This is the biggest stage in the world, but we went for it.

"I knew we had to absolutely push it. I thought it was still possible, but it was right on the edge and I lost it.

"We pushed it, we just pushed it a little too much. We were a little bit too high on 11. A crash is a crash.

"It's been a really intense few months for us and now we're going to go back to the village to chill out."

The final run turned into a procession for Canada 1's Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, who lowered their track record to 52.85 seconds on the third run.

Humphries' overall time of three minutes 32.28 seconds was almost one second quicker than their team-mates Helen Upperton and Shelly-Ann Brown in silver.

Upperton, piloting Canada 2, produced an error-free final run to leapfrog Erin Pac and Elana Meyers in USA 2.
