Two endurance skiers have been forced to miss Olympic events after blood tests showed high haemoglobin levels. Niyaz Nabeev of Russia and Estonian Kaspar Kokk will not be allowed to compete from 12-16 February, said the international ski federation (FIS). Nabeev's "start prohibition" meant he missed the normal hill Nordic combined event on Sunday. Kokk will miss Monday's 15km cross country but could compete in the men's individual sprint on Wednesday. High levels of haemoglobin could indicate use of the blood booster erythropoietin (EPO) but do not necessarily mean an athlete is doing anything wrong. Some have naturally high levels while others may be dehydrated. The "start prohibition" is not a sanction, FIS said in its report, but is in order to protect the health of the athlete. Skiers with high levels are routinely suspended. The duo will each need to pass a fresh test before they can be cleared to compete. The World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed on Friday that over 30 athletes have been prevented from competing at the Games for breaking drugs rules.
