He has long been dubbed as the "fastest man on no legs".
And last year, after extensive tests, South African runner Oscar Pistorius was granted permission to compete with able-bodied athletes at the Beijing Olympics.
Unfortunately for Pistorius, his personal best time of 46.25 seconds in the 400m wasn't enough to qualify.
He spoke in-depth with the BBC's Owen Bennett-Jones. He told of the testing times he faced as he battled to prove his artificial limbs did not give him an unfair advantage, and how he now dreams of representing South Africa on the world stage at London 2012.
