Great Britain won the Women's Four Nations handball tournament in Sheffield despite a 16-15 defeat by the Faroe Islands in a dramatic final game.

After Latvia beat the Turkey Under-21 side 22-21 earlier, they, along with GB and the Faroes, were tied on two wins.

The tournament champions were decided on goal difference taken from the results between those three teams.

The Faroes' Simona Peterson finished as top scorer, with her eight goals on the night taking her overall tally to 23.

Great Britain, whose long-term goal is to field a competitive side at the 2012 Olympics in London, won their opener against Turkey Under-21 22-13 on Thursday and followed that with a 25-20 win over Latvia.

Against the Faroes, Daniela Sposi was again in fine form for the hosts, weighing in with five goals, while Kelsi Fairbrother added four.

Peterson proved too much for the GB defence early on, scoring her side's first four goals as they established an early 4-2 lead.

But Britain came back, as Sposi set up Britt Goodwin before scoring a brace of penalties to give the British side their first lead of the night at 5-4 with 14 minutes played.

Goals from Fairbrother, Lynn McCafferty and Yvonne Leuthold followed as Britain went on a 6-0 run to put them 8-4 ahead with 10 minutes of the half remaining and force the Faroe Islands into calling a time out.

The hosts failed to score again before half-time, with the sides going in level at 8-8.

In a physical second half neither team managed to pull more than two points ahead throughout.

Gurid Mortenson gave the Faroes their first lead of the half after 12 minutes, scoring from the seven-metre line to put her side 12-11 ahead.

From there on they managed to keep their noses in front by one goal until Peterson scored twice in two minutes to give the Faroes a two-goal advantage for the first time since the opening 10 minutes.

Leuthold reduced the deficit to one goal again at 16-15 with just under a minute and a half remaining, then Goodwin thought she had tied the game with only seconds to play.

However, her effort was ruled out for entering the goal area and the Faroe Islands ran down the clock to win.

The British women are next in action in qualifying for the World Championship next month, when they face the Netherlands, Lithuania, Turkey, the Czech Republic and Greece.
