Beijing heroes parade in London

Great Britain's athletes have begun to turn their attention to the London Olympics in 2012 after the celebrations to mark their success in Beijing.

Thousands of people lined the streets in London on Thursday to congratulate Britain's Olympic and Paralympic teams.

"This is the most amazing experience," said triple gold medallist Chris Hoy.

"I'm making the most of it now. In a few weeks time, I'll be back in training, back to the day job and looking forward to London 2012."

Cyclist Hoy, the first Briton to win three golds at a single Games in 100 years, joined more than 300 Olympians and Paralympians on the parade, which ended at Trafalgar Square.

Diving prodigy Tom Daley is already being tipped as one of Britain's best gold medal hopes in four years' time, after qualifying for the Beijing Games at the age of 14.

"Everyone's been really supportive since I came back from Beijing," he told BBC Sport.

"The amount of people that have turned up for the parade, it just shows how great Britain is for supporting people.

"I'm sure in London 2012, it will be the best Olympics ever."

While Daley has firmly set his sights on competing in 2012, other Beijing stars are considering their futures.

Middleweight boxing champion James DeGale said the welcome in London on Thursday had made him think twice about turning professional.

"I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Seeing all this is just pushing me towards 2012. It's so hard to say no to all these people," he said.

"Over two years, I'd probably give up 1m (on the pro circuit). It's that, or stay and listen to that national anthem once again - hopefully.

"By the end of the month, everyone will know what I'm going to do."

For canoeist Tim Brabants, there is no such dilemma.

Olympic success celebrated

"London's definitely on the cards," said the 31-year-old, who picked up Britain's first canoeing Olympic gold medal in the 1,000m kayak.

"Four years is going to fly by now - and who wouldn't want to compete in London?"

Britain's Paralympic team collected over 100 medals in Beijing, finishing second in the overall table behind hosts China.

Helene Raynsford won Britain's first ever gold in rowing, a new sport for the 2008 Paralympics, and is looking forward to defending her title in London.

"In a couple of weeks time we'll refocus and set out sights firmly on training for London," she said.

"There'll be lots of milestones along the way, but it's all about building up to London from now on."

However, London Mayor Boris Johnson warned that "Olympo-cynicism" could set in before the Games as the effects of the global financial crisis are felt.

"There is no doubt that this has brought something of the excitement that people felt in Beijing to British streets," he said.

"I am not going to pretend for a second that this is going to survive to 2012.

"This is going to have its up and downs particularly as we get into a downturn - Olympo-cynicism will return."

But he added that meeting the 9.3bn budget and the time deadlines would be "a challenge and privilege we will meet in the years to come".
