Tyrone made three changes to their line-up prior to throw-in with Ryan Mellon starting instead of Ciaran Gourley and Martin Penrose included at the expense of Brian McGuigan.
As expected, Pascal McConnell played in goal in place of John Devine, whose father passed away on Saturday.
Stephen O'Neill, who recently returned to the panel, began the game on the substitutes' bench.
The teams exchanged scores throughout the first half and there was never more than a single point between the sides up to half-time.
McConnell made a fine save to deny Tommy Walsh a goal in the 23rd minute and two minutes later O'Neill was introduced as a replacement for the injured Colm McCullagh.
The half ended in unseemly style with Kieran Donaghy, Aidan O'Mahony and Darragh O'Se all being yellow-carded and then pushing and shoving on the touchline as the half-time whistle blew.
Kerry's one-point half-time lead quickly disappeared when McGuigan tapped the ball into the net seconds into the second period after the Kerry goalkeeper has saved substitute Kevin Hughes' initial effort.
A Ryan Mellon point extended Tyrone's lead to four points but Kerry fought back to level at 1-10 to 0-13 and then took the lead courtesy of Colm Cooper's 56th-minute point.
Cavanagh kicked a point to level the scores for the ninth time in the match and added another point to nudge Tyrone ahead.
O'Connell made another crucial save, this time denying substitute Darren O'Sullivan with four minutes remaining.
Hughes fisted wide when well placed before late points by Enda McGinley, Hughes and Colm Cavanagh secured victory for the Red Hands.
The excellent Sean Cavanagh, who was Tyrone's top scorer with five points and looked dangerous throughout, was named as man-of-the-match.
