Shaun O'Neill struck three goals for Queen's to sink Cavan in Saturday night's opening Gaelic Life McKenna Cup at Breffni Park.

O'Neill scored two goals in the first half to help the Belfast students into a 2-8 to 0-6 lead at the break.

The forward added his third goal in the second half of a game which saw four Cavan players sent off but replaced under the new yellow card rule.

Queen's player Paul Courtney was also dismissed and replaced after a yellow.

Eddie Reilly, Anton Reilly, David Givney and John McCutcheon were the Cavan quartet which received yellow cards.

Jason O'Reilly and Gerald Pierson top-scored for the Breffni men with five points.
