Colin Devlin scored a goal for Derry in the first half
Derry got their National League Division One campaign off to a winning start at Celtic Park on Saturday night.

The Oak Leafers dominated the first half and a well-struck goal in the 15th minute by Colin Devlin helped them gain a 1-8 to 0-2 advantage by the interval.

Mayo threatened a fightback with five points but Mark Lynch struck Derry's second goal in the 54th minute to make it 2-8 to 0-6 for the home side.

Conor Mortimer then netted for Mayo but Derry always kept their noses in front.

All Star winner Paddy Bradley landed three frees in the first period with Ciaran Mullan getting two points.

Mayo fought back strongly in the second half with five straight scores.

Then their skipper Peadar Gardiner and Andy Moran both saw shots came off the Derry crossbar.
