Down set up a McKenna Cup semi-final clash with Cavan and prevented UUJ from becoming the first college side to qualify for the last four. The sides were level on five occasions in the opening period, with Mark Lynch hitting five for UUJ, and John Fegan and Kevin McKernan on target for Down.
Kevin McGuigan got on the end of a fine move to blast to the roof of the net for Down's goal with 18 minutes to go.
Substitute John Clarke sealed it with three delightful late points.

The first semi-final is on Tuesday at Newry on Tuesday, 22 January when Cavan play Down at 2000GMT.
On Wednesday Derry face Fermanagh at Omagh (2000GMT).
