Seamus McEnaney shows his delight after Monaghan's win |
Seamus McEnaney said he had always been confident of getting his first Ulster Championship win as Monaghan manager against Down at Pairc Esler. "We were under pressure because this is my third term and this was the first win in the Ulster. But we were prepared and expected to win," said McEnaney.
"This team has matured over the three years and when I came into the job I said it would take a year or two.
"Ciaran Hanratty is a big game player and he showed that today."
Down manager Ross Carr said his team had let a winning position slip.
"A lot of things went wrong. At different stages in the second half we were a couple of points up but could push on from that," he said.
"The big score was their second goal. That hit us for a couple of minutes.
"Our boys are disappointed because we have been down this road before. Now we must work to see if we can change our fortunes in the back door system."
