Tyrone's Gavin Devlin is challenged in the McKenna Cup final |
Tyrone have won the McKenna Cup for the third straight year after crushing Monaghan in the Casement Park decider on Sunday. The Reds Hands dominated from the start and a ninth minute goal from Sean Cavanagh set the tone for the game.
The All Star midfielder broke free from his marker and gave keeper Shane Duffy no chance with a superb finish.
Cavanagh added two points to his goal while forward Stephen O'Neill also weighed in with a five-point haul.
While the All-Ireland champions impressed it was a disappointing afternoon for Monaghan.
Seamus McEnaney's team failed to register a score during a 35-minute period either side of half-time.
The Red Hands fired over seven points during that time and eight Tyrone players got on the scoresheet in a one-sided affair.
Goalscorer Sean Cavanagh told BBC Sport that winning the competition was special for his team - Cormac McAnallen lifted the McKenna Cup for Tyrone just weeks before his death in 2004.
"We went out with the will to win and we did that and I think we have done Cormac proud," said Cavanagh.
"The McKenna Cup is very special after what happened a couple of years ago.
"I expected Monaghan to come back at us in the second half but this performance is more promising after our previous two games.
"Everyone knows that teams raise their game against the All-Ireland champions and I think we have finally come to terms with that."
