Peter McGrath was stunned by the scale of Ireland's defeat |
Ireland manager Pete McGrath has described Friday's 100-64 International Rules defeat by Australia as probably his worst day in football. The Irish were badly outplayed and look to have no chance of overturning a 36-point deficit in the second Test.
"I am in a state of shock and dismay. They were superior in every facet of the game," said McGrath.
"The series may be out of our reach but we must regroup and play with pride to make it a more meaningful game."
McGrath, who steered Down to two All-Ireland's in the 1990s, was clearly stunned by the scale of the defeat at the Subiaco Oval in Perth.
"It was a harrowing experience for players and management," he added.
"Australia's pace, accuracy and ability to create an extra man was telling. They always seemed to have a spare man.
"We competed as best we could but on the night it was not enough."
