Brian McIver is a surprise choice as the new Donegal manager |
Former Ballinderry manager Brian McIver was confirmed as the new Donegal manager in succession to Brian McEniff. The Donegal executive opted for Tyrone man McIver on Friday night and the appointment was approved by the full county board on Monday night.
McEniff's latest spell in charge ended after Donegal lost by a point to Cavan in an All-Ireland qualfier second round match in July.
McIver guided Ballinderry to the All-Ireland club title in 2002.
The schoolteacher, who stood down after that triumph, was in the running for the Tyrone job before withdrawing from a contest which ended with Mickey Harte getting the position.
He achieved successes at colleges level with St Pius Magherafelt before taking charge of Ballinderry.
The Donegal role will be his first inter-county job but while the county had a disappointing 2005, he will be working with a squad of players that has the potential to win major honours.
