James Hird is captain of the Australian International Rules team |
Australia's International Rules captain James Hird has said he received death threats before last Sunday's Test match against Ireland at Croke Park. At a media briefing on Friday, Hird said the threats were left on the answering machine of his hotel room.
A spokesman for the Gaelic Athletic Association said they had been unaware of the threats and that AFL officials had not known about them either.
The matter has now been reported to the Garda for investigation.
The GAA said that the incidents reported by Hird had to be the action of a mindless moron and could only be abhorred.
Australia play Ireland in the second Test match in Dublin on Sunday, having lost the first game 77-41.
