Kevin Hughes and his colleagues produced a powerful display |
Tyrone's devastating first half performance set up this comfortable 3-15 to 2-4 win over a jaded Laois outfit at Croke Park. Owen Mulligan palmed Tyrone's opening goal in the third minute and the Mark Harte's 30th minute helped held the Red Hands to a 2-8 to 0-1 interval lead.
Laois fought back in the third quarter with Brian McDonald and Kevin Fitzpatrick hitting the net.
However, a sickening leg break for McDonald then ended Laois' challenge.
Shane Cooke hit the opening score of the match for Laois in the first minute but it proved to the Leinster finalists' only first half score.
Tyrone responded emphatically with Mulligan palming the ball to the net in the third minute after an unselfish Sean Cavanagh pass.
During the remainder of the first half, Laois had no answer to Tyrone's running game.
Sean Cavanagh was in brilliant form for the All-Ireland champions while the lively Mulligan was producing his best form of the summer.
Stephen O'Neill made up for a couple of earlier misses by slotting over a glorious 24th minute point which extended Tyrone's lead to 1-5 to 0-1.
Harte's 30th minute goal extended Tyrone's lead to 2-6 to 0-1 and a total humiliation looked on the cards for Mick O'Dwyer's young side at that stage.
Jason Sherlock scored Dublin's crucial goal against Roscommon |
However to their credit, Laois rallied in the third quarter.
Brian McDonald hammered in an immediate second half goal with a little help from a deflection off Tyrone's Michael McGee and two further unanswered points then cut Tyrone's advantage to eight points.
An unlikely comeback looked a possibility when centre half-forward Kevin Fitzpatrick struck a second Laois goal in the 53rd minute with Tyrone defender Ryan McMenamin getting the final touch.
However, crucially Tyrone regrouped to hit the next two points with the excellent Brian McGuigan and the accurate Harte notching the scores.
Then came a devastating moment for Laois when McDonald sustained his leg break after an accidental clash with McMenamin.
With Laois still reeling from McDonald's sad departure, Harte tagged on a third goal for the All-Ireland champions after great work by McGuigan and O'Neill.
McDonald's injury contributed to the six minutes of added time but Laois would have wanted to call a halt 10 minutes earlier.
Meanwhile, Jason Sherlock's first half goal helped Dublin claim an unconvincing 1-14 to 0-13 victory over Roscommon in Sunday's All-Ireland Qualifier at Croke Park.
Roscommon led 0-3 to 0-0 early on but inspired by Sherlock, Dublin fought back to led by two points at the break.
The Connacht side had goal chances in the second half against the dodgy Dublin defence but they failed to take them and Dublin held on to earn a place in the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals.
