Peter Canavan played through the pair barrier for Tyrone |
Peter Canavan has paid tribute to the "gracious way" the Armagh team and supporters reacted after Sunday's All-Ireland Football Final.
The Tyrone captain spent Monday morning savouring his county's emotional triumph but he still found time to reflect on the sportsmanship of the beaten team and their supporters.
"There had been a lot of debate beforehand about the two sets of supporters and ill-feeling that might develop," Canavan told the BBC.
"But on our way to the hotel last night going through the streets of Dublin, the Tyrone team got a great reception from the Armagh supporters and likewise at the hotel and I would like to compliment them on their behavour".
Canavan said that Joe Kernan's Armagh squad had proved themselves to be "great champions".
"They have carried themselves very well and we only hope that we can do likewise".
Gormley block
Canavan also acknowledged that in "normal circumstances" that he would not have lined out in the game because of his ankle injury.
"I spoke to Mickey Harte on Friday for about an hour or more. We weighed up the pros and the cons and we felt it was best that I started," said the skipper.
Canavan pointed to Conor Gormley's remarkable late block which prevented an almost certain goal for Armagh's Steven McDonnell as the key moment of the match.
"It was the tackle which won us the All-Ireland," said the skipper.
The Tyrone team return home on Monday evening with the plan being for the Sam Maguire Cup to cross the border into the county at Aughnacloy at 1815 BST with further stops planned for Ballygawley and Omagh during the course of the evening.
