Down 1-5 Tyrone 0-23
Tyrone celebrate their landslide victory in the Ulster final |
Tyrone clinched the Ulster Championship in style on Sunday and immediately set their sights on winning a first All-Ireland title.
In a one-sided final at Clones, Mickey Harte's men crushed a disappointing Down by a massive 15 points, just seven days after the teams could not be separated at the same venue.
If the first meeting was a classic, this rematch was a non-event as far as a competitive edge was concerned.
It took Tyrone less than a minute to charge into the lead and they just ran away with it, piling on point after point to chalk up the county's 10th Ulster triumph.
To make matters worse for Down, they had two players sent-off. Dan Gordon was dismissed for violent conduct while defender Martin Cole picked up two yellow cards.
They will miss Down's qualifier against Donegal along with midfield man Gregory McCartan who is serving a four-week suspension after being red-carded in the first meeting with Tyrone.
But, even when Down had 15 players on the pitch, they were unable to give Tyrone a match.
Canavan, who went on to break the record for the number of points scored in an Ulster Championship campaign, was in rampant form as Tyrone established an 11 points to three lead by half-time.
The second half was a similar story and by the end Down looked an extremely dejected outfit.
Owen Mulligan, who scored four of Tyrone's point, said the target was now to go on and lift the Sam Maguire in September.
"This was a great occasion to be involved in," said Mulligan.
"We did our homework and everybody clicked today.
Famous trophy
"Everybody wants the big one now and we will be playing flat out over the next few weeks to try to achieve that."
Tyrone skipper Canavan, scorer of 11 points, confirmed the top priority was the famous Sam Maguire trophy.
"We are just through to the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland and there is a lot of football to be played," said the four-time All Star, a legendary figure in the eyes of Tyrone supporters.
"We will not be getting carried away by this even though we are delighted to win the Anglo-Celt.
"That was one of our aims but it does not mean things will be any easier for us in the quarter-finals."
