John O'Mahony's side successfully defended their Connacht title |
Galway were not at their best but still did enough to beat a brave Mayo side 1-14 to 0-13 in Sunday's Connacht Football Final.
The crucial moment of the game was Matthew Clancy's goal in first half injury-time which gave John O'Mahony's side a flattering five-point interval advantage.
Mayo battled hard in the second half but never managed to get on terms.
John Maughan's players will probably look back to a missed first half penalty which if converted, would have put them four points ahead.
However, Stephen Carolan blazed the penalty wide and Mayo never really recovered.
An early accidental headclash saw Galway losing Paul Clancy and Fergal Costello departing.
Shortly after the missed penalty, Galway brought on Michael Donnellan for Ja Fallon and the former Allstar's introduction boosted the Tribesmen.
DJ Carey helped Kilkenny defeat Wexford in the Leinster final |
Mayo pulled to within a point of Galway with 12 minutes left but the holders then reasserted themselves to edge clear in the closing stages.
Late on, Mayo's Fergal Kelly was given a straight red card after appearing to elbow a Galway player.
Meanwhile, Kilkenny hurlers won a record sixth successive Leinster Hurling title by claiming a 2-23 to 2-12 success over Wexford at Croke Park.
Henry Shefflin inspired the Cats by hitting 1-8 while Conor Phelan, Derek Lyng and DJ Carey were also outstanding.
The sides were level at 0-8 each at half-time but Eddie Brennan's goal early in the second half put Brian Cody's side in control.
To their credit, Wexford kept battling and goals from Barry Lambert and Chris McGrath kept their hopes alive.
However Shefflin's 64th minute goal put Kilkenny seven clear against and they added further scores in the closing minutes.
