Tyrone held by Derry

Derry 1-09 Tyrone 0-12

Tyrone rescued their Ulster Championship hopes with a last-gasp revival in a dramatic game against Derry at Clones.

Mickey Harte, in his first Championship match in charge of the Red Hand county, was staring at a first round exit as Derry twice held a four-point lead in the second half.

But Tyrone fought to the end and earned a second bit of the cherry in the replay which will take place at Casement Park in Belfast on Saturday 24 May at 1530 BST.

It was, as anticipated, a highly-charged contest between these arch rivals and things threatened to spill over on a number of occasions.

Indeed Derry, who had Anthony Tohill back in midfield, played the last few minutes with just 14 men as half-forward Conleth Gilligan was shown a straight red card by referee Pat McEnaney.

Tyrone, with wind advantage, dominated the early stages and put the first four points on the board through Brian Dooher, Peter Canavan (2) and Stephen O'Neill.

Derry finally registered points through Paddy Bradley and Paul McFlynn.

But Tyrone opened a five-point lead as Canavan landed two more frees and Dooher another point from play.

Bradley fisted over from close range to leave his Derry side seven points to three behind at the interval.

And it was Bradley who was to spearhead a remarkable Derry resurgence in the second half.

He scored one early point and Muldoon two to reduce the deficit to just one before Bradley blasted into the roof of the net for the only goal of the game, putting the Oak Leafers into the lead for the first time.

Bradley then scored two more points to give Derry a four-point cushion. Ger Cavlan replied but Bradley then landed his sixth point of the match.

However, that 61st minute score was to be Derry's last and they saw their lead whittled away by points from Canavan, Dooher, Kevin Hughes and then another Canavan free.

Reduced to 14 men, Derry were relieved to get away with a draw at the final whistle. However, Mickey Harte will also be aware Tyrone could easily have had their hopes dashed in the first round.

Minor game: Derry 2-09 Tyrone 2-09 (replay Saturday 24 May 1345 BST at Casement Park).

Connacht Senior Football Championship: Galway 0-12 Roscommon 0-8.
