Fermanagh 0-16 Cavan 1-10
Cavan's Larry Reilly under pressure against Fermanagh |
Fermanagh bounced back from their Ulster semi-final defeat to beat neighbours Cavan by three points in Sunday's All-Ireland qualifier.
The lead changed hands several times but Dominic Corrigan's Ernesiders, with influential midfielder Paul Brewster relegated to the bench, deserved to stay in the All-Ireland reckoning.
Ronan McCabe got them off the mark with a third-minute free but Cavan, with wind advantage, hit back to take the lead through two points from Larry Reilly.
The Ernesiders then replied with a Raymond Gallagher free but Reilly hit a fine 35-yard point from play in the 17th minute to restore Cavan's lead.
Young Fermanagh prospect James Sherry brought the sides level again with a point in the 20th minute before McCabe slotted over his second point to give the Ernesiders the lead.
Fermanagh gained the upper hand when two points from Gallagher, plus another from Sherry, put them 0-7 to 0-3 ahead.
However, Cavan hit back with goal scored by Jason Reilly in the 28th minute to cut the deficit to just one point and throw the contest wide open again.
Gallagher struck a fine free from the ground for Fermanagh after 32 minutes but Dermot McCabe got the last point of the first half to leave just one between the sides at the interval.
McCabe landed a '45' early in the second half to bring the sides level and then edged Cavan ahead.
But Fermanagh, with Paul Brewster entering the fray, responded with unanswered points from Gallagher (2), Ryan Keenan and Colin Bradley.
McCabe continued to keep Cavan in touch with two further points to cut the deficit again to one.
Fermanagh, though, crucially stretched their advantage again through Stephen Maguire, Martin McGrath and Ryan Keenan before Cavan scored with another McCabe free and a further point from Pierce McKenna.
Bradley got the last point of the game to secure Fermanagh's first Championship win over their Ulster rivals.
