Adrian Sweeney led Donegal to success in the All-Ireland second round qualifier at Ballybofey on Sunday.

Sweeney tortured Sligo with a devastating performance in which he picked up seven points.

Sweeney was ably helped by young Stephen McDermott who looks a star of the future as he added three points to Donegal's total.

Michael Hegarty, a late entry into the Donegal team, picked up a couple of frees while substitute John Haran also rifled over a brace.

Sligo, however, depended in the free kicking of Dessie Sloyan who registered five points.

Peter Forde's side started well, but faded alarmingly in the first half. It was the same after the break They gave Donegal the run-around with some great passing and were shooting on sight.

But slowly and surely Donegal began to take control of the game with Sweeney dictating up front and Kevin Cassidy exercising his dominance.

Points from Sloyan, Eamon O'Hara and Michael McNamara helped Donegal into a one-point lead after 15 minutes.

But once Sweeney levelled with a great point from play, Sligo were never to head Brian McEniff's side again.

Off target

A John McParland point in first-half injury time allowed Sligo to continue to pressure Donegal.

But Sligo failed to turn possession into points immediately on the restart and Donegal slowly and surely took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Sligo only managed four points after the restart with Sloyan twice, and Paul Durcan making up for a total of 11 wides.

Although they were off target one less than Donegal, they could not match the enthusiasm and running of McEniff's boys.

Donegal had five unanswered points midway through the half to end the game as a contest.

Haran and Jim McGuiness landed late points to ensure that Donegal are in the hat for the third round qualifying draw.
