Peter McDonnell tries to get his point across during Sunday's game

Armagh manager Peter McDonnell heaped praise on his players after their 0-17 to 0-13 win over Cavan in the Ulster SFC clash at Kingspan Breffni Park.

"I'm shocking pleased with the result," said McDonnell, who was in charge for the first time in an Ulster SFC game.

"This is the first time in the history of Armagh GAA that we've come here and beaten Cavan in the Championship.

"We had a very simple game plan. Fellows stuck to that and it was underpinned by hard work."

McDonnell did acknowledge a degree of concern that his team had missed at least two glorious goal chances but he was still reasonably satisfied with the scoring return.

"We kept chipping away at points throughout the hour's football and 17 points is a good return."

The Armagh boss paid tribute to the display of man-of-the-match Paul McGrane.

"Paul is good in all of our training sessions and all our matches.

"He's thoroughly professional in everything that he does and is an example to all."

McDonnell quipped that he had found out second-hand about Down's stirring victory over Tyrone on Saturday evening.

"My focus this week was Cavan. I believe Down won last night.

"During the course of this week, I'll see what information I can gather up (on Down).

"Newry is not too far from me and I'm sure there's plenty of people in there who would like to talk about them."

Cavan forward Cian Mackey felt that he and a number of other young Breffni players had been somewhat overawed by Sunday's occasion.

"A few players underperformed and we didn't click in the forward line," said the Cavan player.

"We have a couple of young players - myself included and Barry Watters and Rory Dunne."

Mackey said Armagh's direct style hadn't been a surprise but that Cavan still struggled to cope.

"They always play the same sort of style and it was very hard to compete against.

"We were always there or thereabouts but we could never get close enough to put them under pressure.

"They had that bit of class. They kicked scores with ease. We had to work a lot harder for our scores.

"We'll just have to learn from this and come back in the qualifiers."
