Healy wins NI Sports Star award

David Healy scored 13 goals in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign
Northern Ireland's record goalscorer David Healy has been named Sports Star of the Year for the third time at the Belfast Telegraph Awards.

Healy and his team-mates were honoured with the team award while Linfield's Glenn Ferguson was player of the year.

New golfing star Rory McIlroy won the breakthrough award and top coach was Donal Murtagh of Crossmaglen Rangers.

Boxer Barry McGuigan was voted into the Hall of Fame with blind water-skier Janet Gray was also being recognised.

Gray, winner of five gold mdeals at the 2007 World Disabled Water-Skiing Championships in Australia, won the Sport Person with a Disability award for the fourth time.

Healy, scorer of a record 13 goals in Northern Ireland's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, paid tribute to his team-mates.

"Without them winning the award would not have been possible," he said.

"I must also thank our two managers Lawrie Sanchez and Nigel Worthington, and our fans who continue to inspire me and the rest of the boys."

Irish cricket team manager Roy Torrens won a services to sport award while promising swimmer Conor Leaney was young player of the year.
