The 2007 Walker Cup clash between the top amateurs of Great Britain and Ireland and the United States will be played at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland. The club will be only the second in Ireland to host the biennial event, after Portmarnock in 1991.
Garth McGimpsey, the captain for this year's encounter at Ganton in north-east England and a member of the 1991 team, was delighted by the announcement.
"We had great support for that match and there is no doubt that Irish golfers will be right behind the team when they take on America in Newcastle," said McGimpsey.
"Royal County Down is a marvellous course and I am delighted that the Walker Cup is going to be played on one of Ireland's finest and most scenic courses."
David Hill, championship secretary of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club at St Andrews, said the British Amateur Championship had been run successfully at the Northern Irish venue in 1999.
"Royal County Down has always hosted popular and highly successful R&A events and we have no doubt that the Walker Cup will bring even more credit to this outstanding links course."
This year's Walker Cup will be played at Ganton on 6-7 September.
