O'Kane makes MacRory history
By BBC's Jerome Quinn

Maghera captain Gerard O'Kane wrote himself into the MacRory Cup history books with the most amazing comeback in schools gaelic football.

At the end of the first half, he was laid out by a cynical challenge and stretchered off.

A few minutes later, the word was that Gerard was badly concussed.

By the end of half time, we were being told on the sideline that he was up on his feet but still groggy, a bit like his team after they had been outplayed and outfought in the first-half.

The St Mary's boys were out on the pitch incredibly early, at least seven to eight minutes before their opponents, reminiscent of the Kerry team in last year's All-Ireland Final.

History was about to repeat itself with the second team to re-appear, dominating the second-half.

Maghera grabbed a point after just 21 seconds, and followed it with another. Then O'Kane was sent back into the play.

Within seconds, he had won a free for a point.

Then he set up the goal with a skilful and lively run. All of a sudden, the game was up.

Magherafelt were a beaten team (they failed to score in the entire half) and O'Kane had his hands on the MacRory Cup.

I wasn't the only person concerned for the health of O'Kane after he seemed to suffer concussion

He emulated the rare double achieved by his coach Dermot McNicholl, in lifting the MacRory and All Ireland Minor cups.

McNicholl did both in 1983, as well as lifting the MacRory again in 1984.

After the game, O'Kane thanked his medical team for saving his dreams.

"During half-time, they did everything but operate on me. I got some oxygen and the headaches went away and I felt fine".

I wasn't the only person concerned for the health of O'Kane after he seemed to suffer concussion.

Thankfully he came through and Im sure the Maghera medical people knew what they were doing.

As for Magherafelt, they were dreadfully disappointing in the second-half.

Perhaps it was over-confidence, but they should have known that this Maghera team would have come out fighting.

McNicholl's boys came from behind in all three of their previous games and they have some big-game players such as O'Kane, Lynch and Mullan.

It looked like the St Mary's boys were shell-shocked by the two early points and the surprise reappearance of O'Kane.

Or maybe it was the colour clash that confused them...the following text messages were sent to the BBC television coverage.

"The MacRory spectacle was ruined by both teams wearing blue shirts and dark shorts," said Dan.

"And for those watching in black and white, St Mary's are wearing light blue shirts and black shorts and St Pats are wearing..."
