Belfast Harlequins celebrate after their Division Two success
AIB Division Two play-off:
Belfast Harlequins 43-29 UL Bohemians

Belfast Harlequins lifted the AIB League Division Two play-off title with six-try haul against UL Bohemians at Lansdowne Road on Saturday.

Already promoted along with their Limerick opponents, Harlequins had to work hard before collecting the 6,000 pot.

Although the Belfast side had hammered Bohemians 52-3 earlier in the league campaign, life at headquarters was no stroll.

There was a carnival atmosphere and the rugby at times proved equal to the occasion.

Harlequins did their best to get out of sight in the opening period, but Bohemians continually responded.

After Andy Lowe sprinted in for the opening try after four minutes, there was a quick reposte by Bohemians with full-back Rob Desmond going over for Ian Costello to convert.

With both defences collander-like, tries came thick and fast thereafter.

Harlequins young flanker Neil Best forced his way over in the 10th minute and midway through the half Rhys Botha put his midfield partner Johnny Lowe in.

Niall Malone converted both to put his side 19-7 ahead.

But back again came Bohemians with exciting Ireland under-21 centre Martin McPhail scoring with Costello again converting.

Lowe picked up his second try in the 28th minute with Malone adding the extra points.

  Match facts

Cons: Malone 4. Pens: Malone.
UL Bohemians (24) 29

But it was Bohemians who finished the stronger on the run-up to the interval with Costello dancing through a non-existent defence for a try.

The fly-half landed the straight-forward conversion and added a penalty to leave his side two points adrift at the break.

That deficit was quickly overturned three minutes after the restart when winger Keith Matthews outpaced Ajay Derwin to the line after an 80-metre sprint.

But that was the last time that Bohemians were to lead.

Botha conjured up try number five before retiring injured, while replacement winger Andy Park scooted up the right wing for another 10 minutes from the end.

Malone, who had converted both tries, also rifled over a penalty for a personal tally of 13 points.
