![]() | Tuesday, 16 April, 2002, 08:11 GMT 09:11 UK O'Neill doubtful for NFL final ![]() O'Neill paid for playing his second match in a day Tyrone forward Stephen O'Neill is an injury doubt for the Allianz National Football League final against Cavan on 28 April at Clones. The Monaghan ground was confirmed as the venue for the decider by the GAA's Games Administration Committee on Monday evening. O'Neill looks to have paid a heavy price for lining out for his club on Sunday evening - less than six hours after Tyrone's NFL semi-final hammering of Mayo. The Allstar from last year twisted his ankle in Clann na Gael's Tyrone League game against Dromore. Tyrone joint-boss Art McCrory described the injury as a "sprain" and said he was hopeful that O'Neill would recover in time for the 28 April contest. To make matters worse for Tyrone, panellist Ciaran Meenagh also sustained a knee injury while playing for his club on Sunday night. Meenagh lined out for Loughmacrory after coming on as a sub for Tyrone against Mayo earlier in the day.
After Sunday's win over Mayo, joint-team boss Eugene McKenna warned of the possibility of his players sustaining injuries in the club games later in the day. His words proved to be prophetic. Meanwhile, Cavan midfielder Dermot McCabe has returned to light training but he is unlikely to be in contention for the NFL final. McCabe had an ankle operation during the winter and had been ruled out of Cavan's Championship opener against Donegal on 12 May. However, McCabe could be fit for the game against Mickey Moran's side. Meanwhile, Michael McCambridge is out of Antrim hurlers' NHL Division Two semi-final against Kerry at Newbridge on Sunday (1315 BST). Down absentees McCambridge sustained a broken bone in his wrist in Antrim's last outing against Roscommon. Eamon Graham (leg), Martin Scullion (back) and Dermot McAuley (hamstring) all also doubtful for Antrim's game. Down will again be without Johnny McGrattan and Simon Wilson for their Division Two NHL semi-final against Laois at Navan on Sunday (1530). The duo missed Down's win over Wicklow on Sunday because they are on holiday and they won't return before the semi-final. Tom McMahon and Barry Coulter remain on the injured list while Gary Savage picked up a knock in Sunday's win over Wicklow. Derry's Division One NHL relegation play-off against Meath will take place on Sunday at Enniskillen (1530). | See also: Other top Northern Ireland stories: Links to more Northern Ireland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
