It was a night to remember for Northern Ireland football as the team who carved their names in history in 1982 got back together.

Northern Ireland soccer does not have many illustrious moments to recall, but one that is firmly etched in the record books is the victory over Spain 20 years ago.

The current international side face their Spanish visitors in a Windsor Park friendly on Wednesday night.

To mark the occasion, the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters Clubs took the opportunity to re-live that famous night.

Memories

Manager Billy Bingham saw his 10 men score a famous 1-0 victory in Valencia during the 1982 World Cup against the host nation.

But the memories are still fresh for players and fans alike.

The band of ex-players was led by Celtic manager Martin O'Neill who captained the side in that tournament.

The charity dinner, which raised a substantial amount of money for meningitis research, allowed fans to pay tribute one more time to the players.

Bingham, the man who orchestrated the victory, was the main guest as players, fans and dignitaries mixed to share their stories and anecdotes.

Commitments

Some players could not make the commemoration dinner due to other commitments.

The two notable absentees were Gerry Armstrong, the man who scored the all important goal against the Spaniards, and Mal Donaghy who was sent-off in the second-half.

Armstrong was unable to attend due to work commitments which now see him covering games in the Spain on Sunday nights.

Current manager Sammy McIlroy, legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings and Billy Hamilton, who provided the cross for Amstrong's goal, were also present.

Bingham's side recorded a number of notable victories, but none more so that the Valencia win which will be high in the annals of Northern Ireland soccer history.
