Campbell edge Belfast battle

Four sweetly-struck penalties by fly-half Thomas Horner edged Campbell College into the quarter-finals of the Renault Ulster Schools' Cup.

Campbell, however, had to come from behind to snatch victory from last season's beaten finalists in a typically exciting Schools' Cup battle at Fox's Field.

RBAI had controlled the second half and nudged ahead when lock Ryan Caldwell stretched over the line and Johnny Watt's conversion gave them a 10-9 lead with eight minutes remaining.

However, Campbell surged straight upfield and Horner rifled over his fourth penalty to give Campbell victory.

Crunching tackle

Campbell, favourites to defeat their fierce Belfast rivals, ran the show in the opening period with Horner striking two penalties in the first quarter.

RBAI did come into the game in the run-up to half-time as they camped on the Campbell line.

It took a crunching tackle by full-back Johnny Cartmill on his opposite number Jonathan Burgess to deny RBAI a certain try.

Watt, however, landed a penalty five minutes from the break.

Campbell got off to a great start to the second half with another Horner penalty.

But it was RBAI who took over and failed to take a number of chances to cut back the leeway.

Cartmill brought off yet another try-saving tackle on Simon Gardiner before the pressure finally told when Caldwell got the slightest of pressure to ground the ball.

But before RBAI settled, Campbell had surged forward on a rare breakout and after an indiscretion at a ruck, Horner did the needful.

Campbell defended their line well in the final minutes as RBAI were left to rue their missed chances earlier in the half.
