Two of Northern Ireland's most famous footballing figures were honoured at a sports awards ceremony on Monday night.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill and former NI team boss Billy Bingham received special accolades at the Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards.

O'Neill, a Northern Ireland captain under Bingham, picked up a Special Achievement Award after guiding Celtic to the Scottish treble last season.

During a career which saw him play for Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Norwich City, O'Neill won 64 international caps.

As a manager, he took Wycombe Wanderers into the Football League and also had a successful spell in charge at Norwich before joining Leicester and then Celtic.

Bingham played for the first Northern Ireland team to reach the final stages of a World Cup.

The 1958 World Cup was a highlight of an international career which saw 'Bingy' win 56 caps between 1951 and 1964.

Bingham played for Sunderland and Luton Town before moving to Everton where he won a League Championship medal in 1963.

Bingham managed Southport, Plymouth Argyle, Linfield, Everton and Mansfield.

On the international scene, he was in charge of the Greek national side from 1971 to '73.

But he is most remembered for masterminding Northern Ireland's progress to the World Cup finals of 1982 and '86.

Overall, Bingham managed Northern Ireland in 118 matches up to 1993. He was awarded the MBE in 1981.
