The North Down athlete will be up against the best that France has to offer next Saturday 11 August in Kent.

Her treble gold medal in the recent Northern Ireland Championships helped her to this honour. That day she took first place in the shot put, discus and hammer events.

She also took discus gold in the Irish Championships in July and bronze in the AAA Championships with a personal best of 13.32 metres.

It has been an impressive season for Massey, in an international against France in June she broke her own Northern Ireland shot record.

Football

Roddy Collins has been appointed head coach of Carlisle United.

Collins, who led Dublin outfit Bohemians to a league and cup double in Irish domestic soccer last season before falling out with officials at the club, will work on a non-contract basis.

The new Carlisle boss is the brother of former world boxing champion Steve Collins.

Athletics

Eva Massey and Vicki Jamison completed remarkable trebles in the Northern Ireland Athletics Championship at the Mary Peters Track.

Massey took gold in all three of her throwing events, shot, discus and hammer, with her 15m 30 in the shot being only two centimetres outside her Northern Ireland record.

Jamison started her track treble by winning the 100 metres in 12.20secs and then followed it up with gold in the 400m in 54.70.

Her day was completed when she took the 200m title in 25.07.

Ian McMullan set a new Northern Ireland record in the men's shot, he threw 16.56

The most exciting race of the day was the men's 800m, Raymond Adams eventually took that title after moving into the lead on the final bend.

Swimming

Northern Ireland hopefuls Julie Douglas and Michael Williamson were denied progress in their respective disciplines in the World Championships in Japan.

Douglas came second in her 100m freestyle heat, but still failed to make it to the next stage of the event.

Williamson meanwhile finished in fourth place in his heat in the 100m breaststroke
