Carvill and Burns miss cut
Golf

Raymond Burns and Jim Carvill both missed the cut at the South African PGA Championship on Friday.

Burns shot a 75 for 148 while Carvill's 73 left him on 148.

The cut was 145 - one-over-par.

Irish players Peter Lawrie and James Loughnane both qualified for the weekend.

Lawrie hit a 72 for 140 while Loughnane's 73 left him on 144.

American Bruce Vaughan plus home players Chris Williams and Don Gammon lead on 133.

Vaughan fired a 65 while Williams and Gammon both shot 67s.


Golf

The members of one of Belfast's oldest golf clubs met on Monday night to consider offers from property developers for their course in south Belfast.

Balmoral Golf Club occupies 100 acres adjacent to the King's Hall in an area where development land is at a premium.

The club has received several offers from developers.

Its officials have refused to comment on the value of the site, however, it could sell for up to �37m.

Club captain Art O'Hanlon said one option they were considering was developing a new course elsewhere in south Belfast or in the Lagan Valley area.

The club has appointed accountants PriceWaterhouseCoopers to advise them on the offer process.


Boxing

Antrim light-welterweight Mark Winters comfortably won his six round comeback contest against English journeyman Dave Kirk in Liverpool on Sunday night.

Winters claimed a 60-55 verdict against a fighter who had gone the distance with Eamon Magee and Neil Sinclair.


Schoolboys' hockey

The draw for the third round of the Ulster Bank Burney Cup is: Bangor GS or Newry HS v BRA; RBAI or Sullivan v Friends; Cookstown HS v Wallace HS; Campbell College v Kilkeel HS.

These games are due to be played on or before 24 February.


Rugby Union

The draw for the second round of the Renault Schools' Cup is: Campbell College v Ballymena Academy; Ballyclare HS v Down High; Portora Royal v RBAI; Regent House v Belfast Royal Academy; Royal School Armagh v Wallace; Methodist College v Limavady Grammar; Sullivan Upper v Larne Grammar; Strabane Grammar v Portadown College.

To be played on Saturday 10 February


Boxing

Belfast flyweight Damaen Kelly will make the first defence of his IBO World title against Mexico's Edgar Cardenas in Bethnal Green on 17 February.

Kelly's trainer Mickey Hawkins said that Cardenas is currently ranked as the 14th best light-flyweight in the world.


ICE HOCKEY

The Superleague Challenge Cup final has proved a huge hit with fans in Northern Ireland.

All tickets for the March 10 final in the Odyssey Arena were sold within hours of going on sale.


GAA

Sean Dolans of Derry have won the AIB Club of the Year award.

Their reward is a �5,000 development grant, plus �1,000 for winning the Ulster title.

Sean Dolans, with more than 400 playing members, have established good links with the surrounding community, one of the criteria laid down by the GAA and the AIB when the scheme was launched.


HOCKEY

Ulster's sole survivors have been handed a tough draw in the quarter-finals of the Irish Senior Cup.

The County Down side have a home match against Cork Harlequins on Saturday, February 10.

The other matches are: Avoca v Dublin University; Pembroke Wanderers v Gleanna; YMCA v Aer Lingus.
