Argentine weather disrupts rally
Mikko Hirvonen
Hirvonen won the special stage on Thursday night
All eight stages on the first day of the Rally of Argentina were cancelled after bad weather stranded several drivers at Buenos Aires airport.

Thursday's super-special stage was held in Buenos Aires with Friday's stages due to take place in Cordoba.

But one of the three planes carrying drivers and race officials could not land in Cordoba and had to return to the Argentine capital 435 miles away.

Ford driver Mikko Hirvonen of Finland was quickest in Thursday's stage.

Marcus Gronholm is 0.6 seconds behind in second place.

World champion Sebastien Loeb, who was on one of the planes that did make it to Cordoba, questioned the decision to hold the preliminary stage so far away from the rally proper.

"The logistics are a little complex for just one stage which, to my mind, has little to do with the rally," said the Frenchman.

"If super-specials are organised in the region of events for those spectators who can't get out to the stages, so be it. But when they become a priority, I really hope they're worth it."
