Norway's Petter Solberg led at the end of day one of the Rally of Mexico after a superb start. The Subaru driver won the opening four stages to lead by 11 seconds before seeing the gap narrow with third, fourth and fifth in the next three.
Finland's Mikko Hirvonen in the Ford ended the day 4.8 seconds back in second, with Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb within 10 seconds of the leader.
Championship leader Marcus Gronholm crashed out on stage four.
The Finn smashed his rear suspension when he slid off the road.
