'Desperate' Wolves face race-off

Speedway

Wolverhampton owner Chris Van Straaten says they will be doing all they can to miss the prospect of a relegation play-off in the Elite League.

Wolves must beat Peterborough over two legs in a race-off to avoid having to face the Premier League champions to fight for an Elite League spot in 2009.

"We're desperate to beat Peterborough and avoid the play-off.

"If we have to go down that route then we will meet the challenge head-on and do the best we can," Van Straaten said.

Wolves' first leg with Peterborough takes place at Monmore Green on Tuesday and the visitors are doing their best to crank up the pressure ahead of the meeting.

"I see Chris and his riders are getting together for a meal on Monday. I reckon it could be the last supper for them," Peterborough co-promoter Mick Bratley said.

But Van Straaten is refusing to bite.

"Mick can say what he likes, it's all about the riders on the track and we are preparing for the biggest meeting of the season in a professional manner."

Tapes go up at Monmore at 1930 BST.
