Ben Spies and Randy de Puniet crash

Lorenzo secures dramatic pole

World championship leader Jorge Lorenzo secured his fourth pole spot in a row despite his Yamaha blowing up during qualifying for Sunday's German MotoGP.

The Spaniard's bike caught fire and sprayed oil on the track, causing Ben Spies and Randy de Puniet to crash out.

After a delay, Lorenzo beat compatriot Dani Pedrosa's best time, with Pedrosa ending up third behind Casey Stoner.

World champion Valentino Rossi, on his return after breaking his leg six weeks ago, was an impressive fifth.

Frenchman De Puniet was carried away on a stretcher, with what appeared to be a leg injury, but he was subsequently passed fit to race on Sunday.

Clearing up the oil caused a lengthy delay and, once the riders had returned to the track, Pedrosa occupied top spot until the closing stages.

But Lorenzo, having switched to his back-up bike, pipped his compatriot with just three minutes of the session remaining.

He was fortunate to stay out front, however, with a late Stoner surge for pole position being held up by the Yamaha of Colin Edwards, who finished in 12th place.

Rossi, who needed the help of a crutch to walk to his bike, admitted he had felt more comfortable on the bike than he had in practice on Friday.

"I am really happy after this second day because I feel confident on the bike," said the 31-year-old Italian.

"I have suffered more today because we've had two sessions instead of one and I have some pain and I'm more tired than yesterday, but I feel good and my movement is OK.

"For tomorrow, of course, there is a question mark but I hope to be able to finish. I think the podium will be difficult for me but top five would be a very good result."
