Jorge Lorenzo wins Catalunya MotoGP as rivals struggle

Jorge Lorenzo

Highlights - Lorenzo wins Catalunya MotoGP

Jorge Lorenzo extended his World Championship lead as he won his third consecutive race from pole position at the Catalunya MotoGP in Barcelona.

Dani Pedrosa edged out Casey Stoner for second place after both did well to recover from errors which saw them lose ground and fall back down the field.

Andrea Dovizioso was another who made a costly mistake, crashing out from second when he was chasing Lorenzo.

The Spaniard now leads compatriot Pedrosa by 52 points in the standings.

Pedrosa got a flying start but totally misjudged the first corner, running wide and dropping back to 10th, allowing Lorenzo, Dovizioso and Stoner to dispute the lead.

Lorenzo passed Dovizioso at the start of lap four and the pair broke clear of the field, leaving a fascinating battle for third.

Stoner repeated Pedrosa's mistake, dropping back after misjudging the first corner, but like the Spaniard battled his way through the field to get back into contention for third.

When Dovizioso crashed out, that battle became for second place, with Pedrosa keeping his cool to hold off the Australian.

Afterwards, a clearly delighted Lorenzo told BBC Sport his third straight win had been "a dream".

"Andrea was very fast and I was struggling to open up a little gap but he crashed and I profited from that," he said.

'Dream win' on home circuit for Lorenzo

"It is a dream for me to win here."

Pedrosa admitted he had been shaken by his mistake at the start of the race.

"When I went to take the brake, there was no brake and I was really afraid," he added.

"I pumped and pumped and finally got the brake, but I was out, so I took it slow and tried to recover

"I couldn't do Lorenzo's rhythm today, so second is not so bad."

Like Pedrosa, Stoner was happy to have salvaged a decent finish when it looked like he had scuppered his chances with a costly error.

"It was a near-impossible task to overtake here and I was already struggling with my braking points for this race," he said.

"At the end we had the pace but there was just no way I could get past Dani. He wasn't making mistakes so hats off to him."

Pedrosa pleased with second place

The Moto2 race, won by Yuki Takahashi, provided most of the drama of the day.

A first-corner crash saw nine riders taken out, and in the home straight Carmelo Morales, competing in his first race as a stand-in for the injured Axel Pons, was lucky to escape serious injury as he flew into the wall after touching the back wheel of the rider in front.

In the 125cc race, Great Britain's Bradley Smith won a fierce three-way battle for second place behind Marc Marquez, as he held off the challenge of Pol Espargaro and Nico Terol, who came off his bike in the closing stages.
