Report - Pedrosa wins Italian MotoGP

Dani Pedrosa became the first rider to win from pole position this season as he secured victory in the Italian MotoGP at Mugello by over four seconds.

Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo came home second behind his fellow Spaniard, with Pedrosa's Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso third.

Ducati's Casey Stoner took fourth after a thrilling battle with Marco Melandri and Randy de Puniet.

Pedrosa's win puts him second in the standings behind Lorenzo.

The Honda rider's victory allowed him to overtake defending world champion Valentino Rossi in the championship standings.

Lorenzo wore a Rossi T-shirt on the winners' podium in tribute to his team-mate whose season was all-but finished when he broke his right leg in a crash in practice on Saturday.

Pedrosa delighted with perfect weekend

"I had a great feeling on the bike, especially at the beginning section of the race and I could open up a gap," said Pedrosa afterwards.

"To be honest I didn't see who was behind me, I just looked for the gap on my pit board and tried to ride consistently.

"It's important that we are competitive now because we have one weekend off and then three races in a row."

Lorenzo said it had been a "disappointing" race from his point of view.

"I couldn't keep up the pace I had in practice and I'm sorry about that, but I'm happy with the 20 points (for second place)," said the championship leader.

In the Moto2 race, Andrea Iannone delighted the Italian fans with a comfortable win over Sergio Gadea, who snatched second place from Simone Corsi in the closing stages - a result which was harsh on Corsi, who had recovered from starting 26th on the grid.

Marc Marquez topped an all-Spanish podium in the 125cc race, despite Great Britain's Bradley Smith leading at one point.

He had to settle for fourth place, behind Marquez, Nico Terol and Pol Espargaro, with the top four riders covered by just 0.161 seconds.
