Suzuki MotoGP rider Alvaro Bautista breaks shoulder

Bautista has yet to make an impact in his debut MotoGP season

Suzuki rider Alvaro Bautista has had surgery to mend a broken shoulder after being involved in a motocross accident in training for the French Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old Spaniard, who stepped up from the 250cc class at the end of last season, suffered what was called a "simple break" to his clavicle.

He should be fit to ride at Le Mans on 23 May, although with the chance of some pain and restricted movement.

As a result the team currently have no plans to replace him for the race.

Bautista, a former 125cc world champion and 250cc championship runner-up, failed to finish the opening race of the championship in Qatar, and was 10th in the second race at Jerez.

He lies 16th in the standings, with six points from two races, two places below veteran team-mate Loris Capirossi.

Championship contenders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have both also suffered injuries recently in motocross accidents.
