Former world champion Casey Stoner beat local favourite Dani Pedrosa to pole position at the final MotoGP race of the season in Valencia. The Australian raced his Ducati to his ninth pole of the season, finishing 0.053 seconds ahead of Pedrosa. Honda's Nicky Hayden starts in third, despite posting the quickest times in the three previous practice sessions when the conditions were drier. Valentino Rossi wrapped up the title last month, with three races to go. He finished way down the field in 10th place.  | 606: DEBATE |
On the second row are American Colin Edwards and Britain's James Toseland, both on Yamahas, and Frenchman Randy de Puniet, also on a Honda. Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo and Italian Andrea Dovizioso will start together on the third row as they compete for the "rookie of the year" title, alongside Suzuki's Loris Capirossi. Italian Marco Simoncelli claimed pole in the 250cc race, while Hungarian Gabor Talmacsi will lead off the field in the 125cc at the Cheste circuit - with Britain's Bradley Smith fifth fastest. Meanwhile, it has been announced that the San Marino round of next year's championship will be staged a week earlier than originally scheduled - on 13 September.
