Motorcyclist Darren Burns has spoken of his desire to return to racing despite being badly injured in the accident which cost Robert Dunlop his life.

Burns sustained multiple injuries after colliding with Dunlop who had come off his machine during practice for the North West 200 in May.

"It was hard getting back on a bike for the first time, but I always wanted to race again," said the Lisburn rider.

"I will be involved in the Ulster Grand Prix as long as I pass the medical."

Burns had plates and screws inserted in a smashed ankle and also sustained a broken pelvis and wrist.

Three bones in his spine were broken and three neck bones were chipped.

"Thankfully I am still here and can still race a bike," added 37-year-old Burns.

"I spent a lot of time trying to recover and get over the accident in which Robert sadly lost his life.

"I am glad to get back out again because I was just sitting at home doing nothing.

"I am a racer true to my heart. Getting out on a bike again has pushed me to get fit.

"I watched Robert all the way through his career and admired him as a racer and a person.

"Racers are one big family. I love racing with my friends, they are people whom you trust and respect.

"It has been tough on my wife, watching me come through the pain barrier.

"She has been brilliant and my family and friends have been supportive.

"I just want to get back. The aims have not changed - I just like riding bikes, getting to the front and winning races.

"There are a lot of good riders out there and I want to be racing with them, and hopefully winning."
