Estoril's tale of two sorrys

A lot of the headlines going into Estoril were around James Toseland making more enemies than friends in the paddock over the opening two rounds, after some aggressive overtaking moves at Qatar and Jerez.

Nicky Hayden was added to the blacklist on Saturday when James inadvertently held him up on a hot qualifying lap.

When James went around to Nicky's motorhome to formally introduce himself and apologise he had the door shut firmly in his face!

It was a rare moment of crankiness from the usually amenable former world champion, who later made amends by visiting James in the Tech3 hospitality tent and making his own apologies for, in his words, "acting like a baby".

The news that James had been snapped up by Tech3 Yamaha for another season somewhat overshadowed a rather interesting sub-plot at Estoril, which was Tech3's relationship with the Japanese factory also being extended, until 2010.

Curiously, this announcement came very quickly on the back of claims from highly-successful 250cc and 125cc Team Manager Jorge Martinez that he was in negotiations with Yamaha and Suzuki about running his own satellite team in MotoGP next season.

It seems Martinez's best chance of doing this would now be with Suzuki, who are keen to find a space for their current AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies in MotoGP next season.

For Martinez this could open the door to a one-man team in the top class, expanding to two riders in 2010 and making space for his current Spanish protg Alvaro Bautista.

Casey Stoner
Camera trouble may have cost Stoner some championship points

Over his career Casey Stoner has developed a reputation as a hot head, and the back of his garage is rarely a safe place to be after the kind of session he had on Saturday.

However, after qualifying down in ninth place the World Champion decided to take a very different tact and went around each and every team member offering a firm handshake and words of encouragement, assuring them there was still time to get it right.

On Sunday morning Casey went fastest in the warm-up (albeit in the wet) and took a solid sixth place in the race, proving that even in an individual sport like MotoGP, it is teamwork that makes the dream work.

Casey's performance on Sunday was made all the more remarkable by the fact that he spent the first half of the race battling with an on-board camera that came loose on his instrument panel and kept getting trapped under the clutch lever and even locked his steering.

He told me: "I didn't know what the hell it was and I was worried it might be something to do with the bike's electronics. If I'd had known it was the camera I'd have ripped it out!"

A managing director from TV rights holders Dorna went to make a personal apology to Ducati immediately after the race but that wasn't enough to appease Casey, who reckons it cost him fourth place and an extra three championship points.

Finally, one of the main talking points at Estoril was regarding Marco Simoncelli.

Marco Simoncelli
There is a motorcyclist somewhere under that hair

The question on everybody's lips, however, was not how he managed to secure the first ever pole position for Gilera in the 250cc class, but how on earth does he squeeze so much hair inside his helmet?

Some of us thought his appearance at the front row press conference was actually a cameo from Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons, but Marco had the last laugh with a podium finish on Sunday.
