Bayliss crashed in second qualifying but only suffered bruising |
Troy Bayliss set a blistering pace to take pole position for the second round of the World Superbike championship on home turf at Phillip Island. The Australian Ducati rider clocked a one minute 31.493 seconds in Superpole qualifying to hold off Yamaha's Troy Corser (1:32.011).
Former two-time world champion Bayliss overcame a crash in the second session.
The 38-year-old slid off the track at turn 11, two minutes before the end, but suffered only minor bruising.
Fellow Australian Corser, who led after Friday's first qualifying session, was followed by Italian Ducati rider Michel Fabrizio in 1:32.164.
Veteran Bayliss, who is in his final year in the championship, leads the rankings after the first round of the season, two points ahead of Italy's Max Biaggi.
He will start from 16th position after failing to take part in the Superpole session because of a snapped gear lever.
