Qatar to host first floodlit race

The opening race of next year's MotoGP championship will make motorsport history after it was revealed the race will take place under lights.

The Qatar MotoGP at Losail on Sunday 9 March will be the first floodlit tarmac world championship motorsport event.

"Changing it to a night time allows for a better synchronisation with European television schedules," said Carmelo Ezpeleta of event organisers Dorna.

"This is a big boost for broadcasters and a landmark moment for MotoGP."

A night race at the Losail has been on the agenda since MotoGP Safety Commission members Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi and Kenny Roberts Jr rode the track on street bikes at last year's Grand Prix.
